$14,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant gives increased accessibility at the YMCA of Central East Ontario – Belleville Branch

Belleville, ON – On Friday, the YMCA of Central East Ontario, Belleville Branch will welcome members of the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the replacement of an accessibility lift for the pool.

Local MPP Todd Smith and OTF Grant Review Team member, Deanne Dulmage, will be on hand to congratulate the Belleville Branch members and hear more about how increased accessibility at the YMCA is already making a difference.

“The YMCA of Central East Ontario Belleville Branch is committed to ensure accessibility for existing and new customers within our community. The new pool lift will allow access for those who experience mobility issues,” said Todd Smith, MPP for Prince Edward – Hastings. “The Belleville site is an older building, and funding to upgrade is always a challenge for any organization. I am pleased that the Ontario Trillium Grant was able to assist in the delivery of the aquatics program. I applaud the dedication of the Belleville YMCA staff and CEO in recognizing and delivering programs for every age group with an emphasis on healthy activities for everyone.”

In addition to the installation of the pool lift the YMCA of Central East Ontario has made a number of changes to the Belleville facility over the last three years including the locker rooms, a new sprung wood floor in the gymnasium, the individual conditioning centre and multi-purpose and studios areas.

“The impact that the lift has had on our members cannot be under estimated. The lift allows for independent access to the pool which can have a significant impact on a person with mobility challenges.” Sarah Tokley, Manager of Association Aquatics. The YMCA of Central East Ontario, Belleville Branch is committed to increasing accessibility to its facility and pool as we recognize the importance of aquatic activities for all.

An agency of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is one of Canada’s largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million, OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities. www.otf.ca
